About our Multicultural Camps

We believe that by experiencing aspects of different cultures in a fun and supportive environment, children will gain a different perspective which will help them develop a life-long curiosity and interest in valuing and promoting diversity and inclusion.

Our goal for the Multicultural Camps is to introduce children to different cultures represented in our communities in a fun, safe, and enquiring environment. Each Camp is led by a Cultural Ambassador; local immigrants who customize each day's activities with their own cultural heritage that can include their language, food, games, crafts, music, song, and dance.

Camp Content

Core to all our camps are hands on experience of the culture and traditions of the cultural ambassador's country. Most important is experiencing these through food, not simply tasting the food, but cooking and eating food from each camp's focus culture.

Day and Half Day Camps

In 2023, we enjoyed learning about Taiwan, Philippines, Brazil, Korea and Ukraine...

Philippines

On Philippines day, we learned about Philippine fiestas, and made flower hoop decorations. We tried a Philippine drink, sharing traditional 'palamig' - grating our own melon to get the juice for it. Everyone enjoyed cooked all-day breakfast Filipino style, "longsilog", and finished the day by learning and dancing the traditional Bulaklan flower dance.

Taiwan

On Taiwan day, we learned about the Pingxi Lantern Festival and the children had fun creating their own Taiwanese hanging lanterns with lots of imagination. We shared traditional assorted snacks, "winter melon tea" and rice crackers, and we learned to cook zongzi 粽子, vegetarian sticky rice dumplings . To end the day we had fun playing jianzi 毽子 (Chinese shuttlecock)...

Brazil

On Brazil day, we learned about Brazilian Carnaval and made our own Brazilian carnival mask. We tried 'pao de queijo', traditional snacks made of cheese balls and guarana. During our cooking segment, we learned how to cook Brazilian pastel with 2 fillings (beef and cheese). We ended the day with the most famous dance in Brazil.... samba!

Ukraine

On Ukraine day, we learned about the meaning of the flag, and how important sunflowers are to Ukrainians before making our own crepe paper sunflowers. We made paint stamps using fruits and vegetables and learned some Ukrainian. We shared traditional assorted snacks and learned about the Feast of the Saviour (harvest celebration). During our cooking segment, the children cooked deruny (Деруни) - Ukrainian potato pancakes. We finished the day playing Little Snake - a traditional Ukrainian game!

Korea

On Korea day, we learned about and practiced writing hangeul (the Korean alphabet). We made our own mini sogo (drum) with Korean flag. We tried amazing assorted snacks including a traditional rice punch (sikhye 식혜) , Korean honey cookies (yakgwa 약과; 藥菓), and Korean sweets (hangwa 한과). For lunch, we learned how to make bibimbap (비빔밥) . We finished the day by playing some traditional Korean games including tug of war (juldarigi), bean bag throwing (tuho), slap-match (ttaji-chigi). Thank you to Meadow Park Cafe for donating bibimbap sauce for our cooking session.

My name is Yami and I'm from Hong Kong. I love snowboarding and hiking. I have a few years of experience working with kids and now I am working for Whistler Multicultural Society.

My name is Sanio from Taiwan. I

always work with people from all around the world and love to share my culture with the

friends I meet. I am very excited to share Taiwan culture!

Oleksandra Onofreichuk

I'm Ukrainian. I love being outdoors and trying new things... playing games, exploring nature, or getting creative with arts and crafts. One thing that really makes me happy is exploring different cultures.

Suin Lee

My name is Suin from South Korea. I came to Canada in 2008. Now, I have 2 kids, 7 years old daughter and 5 years old son who make my life much more fun.

Larissa Queiroz

My name is Larissa from Brazil.

I love being out in nature, enjoy the sun and meeting different people in the world. I like to share my culture through music, food and dance.
